I loved "Girl from the South" by Joanna Trollope. .

Susan Freeland is another favorite author. One of her books is "The Forest Lover" about a Canadian painter who lived in British Columbia when women were not allowed to do what she wanted to do. Really really good. I've read all her books and enjoyed them.
Two other favorite books are "Bridge of Size" and "That Old Cape Magic" by Richard Russo.
